Is too much Vitamin C bad for you?

I am sick and bought a bottle of liquid Vitamin C which is 1000mg per tablespoon serving. The serving is 1667% of the USRDA. If I am just taking this for a day or two to feel better, is that unhealthy?

  1. its vitamin, i don't think its bad
  2. No. It's dangerous for some vitamins, but not Vit. C. Any extra Vit. C not absorbed by the body is urinated out.
  3. You're wasting your money. Most studies show heaps of c does nothing. Expensive urine, but it won't hurt you.
  4. I have heard too much vitamin c can cause chromosomal deformities.
  5. Your body will eliminate what it doesn't need. You'll know you've had too much Vitamin C when you get diarrhea.
  6. dont have a whole serving of it. too much of ANYTHING isnt good including water it sounds like its very concentrated dont take a whole tablespoon like, a third of that.
  7. Nope. Your body flushes out what it doesnt use.
  8. It is not unhealthy (Vitamin C is not one of the vitamins that make you sick in high doses), but it is a waste of money. First, Vitamin C has not been proven to help with immunity when taken in large doses while sick. Second, in doses that high, most of the vitamins are simply going to come out when you go to the bathroom, as Vitamin C is water soluble, and anything your body can't use will be excreted in urine.
  9. No. too much vitamin C is probably the only thing that you can overdose on. You body will just naturally filter out what it doesn't need of the vitamin C because its not a harsh vitamin. It wont hurt you and it won't cause you to have to get your stomach pumped either. But you do have to be careful to not overdose(taking more of it than is recommended) regularly because eventually the body will just filter it all out if it gets used to filtering so much out which will cause your immune system to drop. Hope this helps!
  10. Too much of ANYTHING is bad for you. Too much vitamin C can actually inhibit your body's ability to repair and grow muscle tissue. If you're taking it for a day or two, take a single serving. You should be sure to have zinc and vitamin C in your daily diet, and can take a multi-vitamin that contains both, but watch your doses.
  11. to much will give you the runs, so you'll know.
  12. I down six 500mg tablets a day. Gee, guess what, I barely ever get sick
  13. Vitamin C is a safe one to overdose on. You body can get rid of excess.
  14. we just need 1000miligrams of Vitamin C per day..more than that...it could b dangerous..
  15. Everything I have ever read indicates that you cannot overdose on Vitamin C. The body does not retain Vitamin C very long and it is simply discharged frequently. I often take large doses of Vitamin C when I feel a cold coming on.
  16. While taking too much Vitamin C is not toxic to your body, it does cause some discomfort. Doctors sometimes recommend that as long as you don't get diarrhea, you'll be fine with the amount of vitamin C that you're taking in. There are a variety of symptoms for 'overdose' if you're worried about it. The most common are nausea and diarrhea. Essentially, you body will get rid of the excess vitamin any way that it can. However, if you have underlying medical conditions, they could potentially complicate things. Lots of luck!
  17. Too much vitamin C can lead to gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, diarrhea), kidney stones, and excess iron absorption. Your Daily Allowance Diet Power sets your Personal Daily Allowance (PDA) of vitamin C at the Food and Nutrition Board's (FNB's) Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). In April 2000 the FNB raised the RDAs for this nutrient by 8 to 50 percent, depending on sex and life stage. For most men the RDA is now 90 milligrams; for most women, 75 milligrams. For boys 14** to 18, however, it's 75 milligrams; and for girls in that age group it's 65 milligrams. For pregnant women age 18 or under it's 80 milligrams; for those age 19 to 50 it's 85 milligrams. During lactation it's 115 milligrams for mothers 18 and younger and 120 milligrams for those age 19 to 50. (In the rare event that you are over 50 and pregnant or lactating, Diet Power uses the PDA for the 19-to-50 age group.) In addition, there is strong evidence that smokers need extra vitamin C. If you check the "I smoke" box on your Personal Information Form, Diet Power will increase your PDA by 35 milligrams.*** (This, too, reflects the recent RDA change. Formerly, smokers of all ages, male and female, got the same RDA: 100 milligrams.) All of these figures are minimums. It is generally considered safe to get more vitamin C than your body needs¾provided you get it from foods, and then only up to a point. A 1998 British study found that the popular practice of taking daily 500-milligram supplements could damage part of the cells' DNA. The finding corroborated a longstanding claim by some experts that vitamin-C supplements may eventually damage the heart and other organs.
  18. As a physician who specializes in weight loss and supplementation I have studied this question at great length. A thorough research of the literature reveals no case data of vitamin c overdose or intoxication. One would assume this from the fact that vitamin C is a water soluble molecule and does not accumulate in the body. Numerous case studies document no ill effects from doses all the way up to 10,000 units per day over a course of decades!! However , most medical sources recommend limiting the intake of Vitamin C to 2000 mgs/day here is an cut and paste of a vitamin C toxicity profile from the citation below: Toxicity and symptoms of high intake Since ascorbic acid is a water-soluble vitamin, toxic levels are not built up or stored in the body, and any excess is lost mostly through urine. If extremely large amounts are taken gastrointestinal problems may appear, but will normalize when the intake is cut or reduced. To determine a level where a person might experience discomfort is difficult, since some people can easily stomach up to 25,000 mg per day, while others start having a problem at 600 or 1,000 mg. Some people using mega dose therapy of vitamin C may have side effects such as gastrointestinal complaints including diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramps. These side effects normally stop as soon as high potency intake is reduced or stopped SO as you can see 1000mg/day is certainly safe
